As a baseball fan, it’s wise to never get too high and never get too low. A team’s performance takes place over a long timeline, as does a player’s. Overreacting to any one outing or plate appearance or game is too much of a roller coaster because there are so many outings, plate appearances, and games.

But with every day, the Royals inch closer to the end of this historic turnaround they’re orchestrating, which makes every outing, plate appearance, and game seem so important.

This is why in a week in which the Royals swept the White Sox and have taken two of three from the Tigers so far, fans could be forgiven for waking up with a sour taste in their mouths. Because the ending to that third Tigers game was tough to swallow. Watching the bullpen blow another late lead stings, especially after the significant bullpen acquisitions at the deadline.

It feels like the Royals need to win every night to keep up. It feels like every bullpen guy needs to be perfect and every plate appearance needs to be a good one.

The emotional toll of important baseball is here … not just for the players but for the fans, as well. Remember, this is what we wanted.
